Scripture: Joshua 24:15 (KJV)
“…choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
“Human-beings have the capacity to be wretched and the capacity to be wonderful…it’s a choice.”
-Dr. Cornell West
Every coin has two sides. When a coin is tossed in the air it lands on one side or the other, which is commonly referred to as “the luck of the toss”. Real life, however, is somewhat different. As humans, we have the opportunity to make positive and negative decisions. Everyday life provides opportunities to steer our beliefs, our words and our actions. The power that lies in words is a mystery. Our thoughts energize and fuel our words. We may choose to use words to lift up and strengthen humanity or use our words to rip humanity into shreds…We decide.
We may choose to use words that spread enlightenment, love, peace and hope or we may choose to use words of destruction, hatred, discrimination, divisiveness and pain. Every new day begins with an awakening…we are blessed to awaken with a deep replenishing breath. How we choose to use our time beginning with the second after that awakening moment is determined by choices. Let’s begin by asking ourselves, “Which direction do I choose to take my life today?”
Today, I choose to restore buried dreams; to make sacrifices for environmental health; to release positive energy into the universe. Today, I choose to breathe new life into my quest for knowledge and understanding. Today, I choose to appreciate the beauty of the earth and to share a smile with my neighbor. Today, I choose to uplift my community, and to speak words of empowerment to someone of the younger generation.
I give praise and thanks for the awareness that each new day brings and with that awareness an opportunity to create paths of magnificence! I ask Oh Lord, for the courage to walk down those newly created paths and if by chance I discover today that I am on a path that is draining my positive energy and drowning me in feelings of defeat, I will not feel defeated, for I know that I may find mental strength, verbal power and renewal of spirit in Thee.
Therefore, when I am troubled over choices or if I discover that somewhere during the day I made an unwise choice, I will learn from my mistakes, plan for tomorrow and when tomorrow arrives – with Thy help…I will speak words of Power and declare to make choices that foster positive change in me and the world around me. Amen.
