“The Color of Hunger” By: Daphne Knox McClain

Yellow-dying in a field…fading, fading-fast the nourishing stalks are weeping and vanishing across Ethiopia.

Greenery is plentiful on MY plate, yet today, a mother places before her child an empty plate holding only drying, stale, brown bread.

The beautiful Honduran colors…gold, red, hues of blue and tides of orange, all woven together in an array of joy from living…somehow, Poverty and Hunger hide themselves beneath the prideful garments.

Look upon the Nile, search for the Tree of Life, gaze upwards at the Nigerian skyscrapers- Amazing to the eyes! Keep traveling, keep journeying, keep pressing onward until you leave the beautiful coffee of MY skin and approach the rotting red of Hunger.

America! Oh, America the Beautiful-a song for the Home of the Brave and Land of the Free! America you are overflowing with wealth, riches untold, and pastures of successfulness. Yet, under your gorgeous skies there are children who will fall asleep each night with no dreams, no prayers, and awake tomorrow to a Purple Heart of Hunger.

How can we eliminate Hunger and keep the beautiful Colors alive?
